Do DVDs/CDs Still Have A Place in The World?

On account of the vast capacity in storing massive music by smartphones and tablets, the digital music gradually plays an important role in enjoying music through car stereos, iPod speaker dock. Meanwhile, streaming services like Pandora, Spotify, and Slacker offer incredible on-demand selection, obviating the need to buy music CDs at all. Similarly, with the popularity of buying or renting on-line movies to our iPhones and iPads, many platforms, such as Amazon Instant Video, Apple ecosystem, Netflix, provide on-demand rentals for all kinds of movies. So, do DVDs/ CDs still have their places in this world? For me, the answer is absolutely yes. Here is the quick rundown of my reasons.

For CDs, they offer amount of advantages that digital-music solutions couldn't match. They sound better, and they are easier to play in the car and around the house. They don't saddle you with DRM hassles. And you can rip CDs to whatever bit rate and format you want, including lossless formats like FLAC. Although many softwares can remove DRM now, many of these advantages are still true today. As far as I know, digital music can be downloaded to the phones and tablets from many platforms, however, there are still many people who don't touch music from Amazon or iTunes because the bit rates are too low. (Amazon's MP3s are encoded at a variable bit rate that averages around 256Kbps, while Apple's AACs are encoded at 256Kbps.)

Refer to DVDs, as we all know that, downloading the on-line should depend on the internet. Wherever there is no connection there is no access to movies. If you are the parents of young kids, what you should do is that guiding them how to use DVD player to see the cartoons, instead of teaching them how to surf the Internet. Many kids often want to watch them over and over until they are memorized. It is worthy to buying the DVD for countless use. Furthermore, not every family can afford to buy an iPad/ iPhone. Certainty is why we still buy/ rent DVDs for kids’ education.

In my eyes, DVD media will be alive for years to come. Believe it or not, there is a population who loves to keep DVD boxes and DVDs. Not everyone has a computer for renting/buying on-line movies. If I buy a DVD movie, I can rip videos to whatever format I like and can play it in my old fat PSP, without problems.
